PW Live!! 4-8-09 High School Poetry Slam

This week on Philly Word Live: April 8, 2009. Philly Word Live continued poetry month with the High School Poetry Slam. Host Ogbonna Hagins gave a brief history of poetry month and it’s establishment by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. The first song of the show was called “Pull Your Pants Up,” released by Dwayne Brown, also known as Dooney the Priest. It was the first time being introduced to Philadelphia. Caller, Judge John Braxton, encouraged listeners to get out and vote on May 19 for City Controller. Having been judge, head of a bank, and auditor, Braxton believes he can protect the city’s budget and ensure its money is being used efficiently as new City Controller. The first poetry guests were then introduced, two high school students Sean Handy and Damini Lopez. Sean, 16, from the Philadelphia Military Academy, recited a poem he wrote called “I Don’t Need Ya’ll” and Damini Lopez, 16, from the High School of Creative and Performing Arts, recited the self written poem, “Shoot for the Buildings.” The next guests were youth from the North Stars of Art Sanctuaries. Each poem was uniquely inspired, showcasing the aptitude and talents of the North Stars. The North Stars will present a theatrical production, Dad for the Day, on May 1, performing African drumming, dance, hip hop, and poetry. The enthusiastic Tim Greene called in to share his inspirational thought: Be Honest. He stressed the importance of telling the truth, rather than getting caught in a lie. Ogbonna also relayed a compliment to Tim, from a listener who heard Tim speaking in LA, and was truly inspired by his message. The show closed with two more recited poems by Sean and Damini, and the crew signed out, ending the first successful poetry slam.

3-25-2009: Comic Books, Black Comic Books and Literacy Through Comic Books

Philly Word Live!! Host, Ogbonna Hagins introduced the audience to the vast, ever-growing world of comic books. Rasheeda opened the show with a brief history of Comic Books and Funny Books, while Ogbonna introduced and interviewed two members from the East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention. First guest, Yumy Odom, who has worked for over 30 years as an educator, researcher, scientist, and has worked on projects to promote development of stable families, communities, and societies. The second guest, multi-talented illustrator, Akin Brown. Akin has worked on projects ranging from graphic design, painting and children’s book illustrations. Both guests lamented how comic books have reached people of all ages through their interesting portrayal of fantasy, the extensive use of vocabulary, and the artistic illustrations that captures reader’s minds. Yumy spoke of his personal journey in developing comic books and how working with Akin has led the duo to the development of powerful comics, as well as artistically imaginative characters. A caller, Michael expressed his love for comic books and his belief that all types of people can find interest in them. Later, the story of the first True Hero, Heru. The always enthusiastic Tim Greene calls as usual, to provide his Inspirational Thought of the Week, explaining the importance of “Learning to live where you are.”, “Finding opportunities in your home town.”, and “Staying true to yourself in all circumstances”. Rasheeda ended with the Ill Street News, and the crew signed out.

The discussion of the closure of William Penn High School was reopened, as Kay, a caller from Chester, Pennsylvania discussed with Ogbonna the current education problems the School Districts in the area were experiencing. To recognize Women’s History Month, an interview from the female boxing champion Layla Ali was played. She offered her opinions on the current idolization of things in Americans culture. A representative (Felicia R. Phillips) of the Philadelphia Black Public Relations Society, the local chapter of the National Black Public Relations Society was a guest to speak about Milestones: Stories of African American Women in the Media event occurring Wednesday night. The event is an opportunity for the public to listen to, and speak with African American women who have created successful careers for themselves in media. Lastly, show regular Tim Greene brought his lessons on calculated risks, and weighing the positive and negative consequences of each action. The show was ended the Ill Street News.
